Education and Safe Schools Program

Main Street applauds the improvements in English and Math competency which has resulted since the implementation of the No Child Left Behind law. We are please to see that all students are benefiting from increased accountability and elevated standards.

MATH AND SCIENCE EDUCATION

The number of post-secondary students studying to be teachers has increased for all subjects except Math and Science. We at Main Street would like to see more college students pursuing degrees in math, physical and life sciences, and technology, and for those students to return to primary and secondary school and use their degrees to prepare tomorrow's Math and Science leaders.

“There is a shortage of qualified, specialized math and science teachers in the school systems. When students graduate college with a  technical degree in math, computer science or chemistry, they are very attractive to private industry. Often, they are recruited to work in business, engineering or consulting before they have even graduated," said Sarah Chamberlain, RMSP Executive Director.

“We must find a way to encourage and incentivize these students to take their degrees and training back to the school systems and help form tomorrow’s leaders in math, science, and technology.”

SAFE SCHOOLS

Every parent is concerned about the safety of their child in school. And though most schools are doing a good job of maintaining order, there has been a troubling rise in the number of gangs and gang-related activity in our schools.

“There is no place for organized gangs or gang activity in our schools. We have a zero tolerance policy and will assist any school or district actively trying to improve the safety and welfare of their students as they fight this growing menace to our children,” said Chamberlain.
